Winemaker’s Notes
Dark garnet to the rim of the glass. Exotic, perfumed nose of ripe red and black fruits with hints of grilled bread, beef tartar, and a summer garden just after rain. The enticing palate is loaded with dark red fruit and lovely hints of fresh herbs. Texturally robust and velvety with mouth-filling, integrated tannins and a glycerin finish that lasts forever. An absolutely delicious wine from a low-yielding vintage.
Vintage Notes
2021 turned out to be one of the warmest vintages we have ever had. The season started off about normal with budbreak around the third week of April. The weather warmed up and we saw bloom dates that were a little bit early beginning the first week of June. During bloom of the 2020 vintage, we had cool temperatures with cloud cover and rain resulting in shatter and poor yields. The prior year’s lackluster bloom resulted in fewer clusters being formed in the buds for the 2021 vintage. The weather really warmed up, hitting many days of 100+ degrees, including a couple of days of 110+. The vines weathered the heat quite well and berries were very small, also leading to a light crop, yielding an average 1.5 – 2.0 tons per acre. Harvest began on September 8th and finished on October 12th, one of the earliest harvest endings for Figgins Estate Vineyard. What the vintage lacked in yield, it made up for in quality, producing wines of exceptional density.

A proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, the stunning 2021 FIGGINS Red Wine was stored in 57% new French oak prior to bottling and is entirely sourced from their estate vineyard in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. It shows off its sexy, inky core, reveling in violets, dark currants, sweet pipe tobacco and loamy soil notes on the nose. The palate is plush, deep and concentrated, with serious structure, tension, weight and depth as this glides throughout the drinking experience. Everything is in clockwork balance here, as the green herb, iron, dark chocolate shavings and graphite tones from the Petit Verdot mesmerize, alongside the dense dark fruits from the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Mouthwatering and delicious. A profusion of red and black fruit is supported by good acidity and moderate tannins in this deceptively concentrated, well-modulated blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Drinkable now; best from 2028.

The 2021 Estate Red Wine from Figgins checks in as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot (they don’t specify the percentages) that was aged in 57% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Its deep purple hue is followed by a gorgeous bouquet of cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and spicy, classy oak. Rich, medium to full-bodied, focused, and structured on the palate, it shines for its remarkable purity as well as overall balance. It should benefit from 3-4 years in the cellar and have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

The 2021 Estate Red Wine from the Figgins Estate vineyard is a big, generous and inky blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. With 14.5% alcohol, this wine impresses with a complex and layered profile, offering juicy plum and blackberry jus, accompanied by oak essences and brown baking spices. It's full-bodied, indulgent and juicy, showcasing succulent dark cherries and black raspberries with elegance and grace. The long-lingering finish makes it food friendly, and it has me craving flame-kissed steaks and chops. This red blend is set for release in the summer of 2024. Mark your calendar because this will be an instant success upon release and will further reward those who cellar this beauty. Decanting is recommended. Bravo! The wine aged for 22 months in almost 60% new French oak.
