Winemaker’s Notes

Our inaugural cave selection is extremely dark crimson. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Shouting Stones block directly beneath the new estate winery. It has a brooding nose of plums blueberries, cassis, vanilla latte, baking spices, and sunbaked river rocks. The palate opens with a dense mouthful of fresh blackberry, chocolate, and dried herbs. The mountain vineyard tannins are balanced by lovely acidity. This rich bottling of our top three barrels closes with a lingering, powerful finish. A very age-worth wine built for your cellar.

Vintage Notes

2021 turned out to be one of the warmest vintages we have ever had.  The season started off about normal with budbreak around the third week of April.  The weather warmed up and we saw bloom dates that were a little bit early beginning the first week of June. During bloom of the 2020 vintage, we had cool temperatures with cloud cover and rain resulting in shatter and poor yields. The prior year’s lackluster bloom resulted in fewer clusters being formed in the buds for the 2021 vintage. The weather really warmed up, hitting many days of 100+ degrees, including a couple of days of 110+.  The vines weathered the heat quite well and berries were very small, also leading to a light crop, yielding an average 1.5 – 2.0 tons per acre. Harvest began on September 8th and finished on October 12th, one of the earliest harvest endings for Figgins Estate Vineyard. What the vintage lacked in yield, it made up for in quality, producing wines of exceptional density.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

The Caves

This selection of our finest three barrels of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in French oak for two years in the caves. Hewn from solid 15-million-year-old basalt which underlies our estate vineyard, the caves maintain a year-round 55-58˚F temperature and ideal 65% humidity – perfect for aging premium wines.

Vineyard Block

Shouting Stones block of Cabernet Sauvignon—The end posts from this block are old limestone fenceposts from Kansas, very near where the Figgins side of Chris’ family first settled. Each one tells a story through its ancient fossils and 150 years of human and animal imprint. The 2 acres of clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon is planted to a vertical shoot positioning trellising style, but more like those seen in Bordeaux with higher density – 7ft row spacing – and a low cordon wire. The name of this block was inspired by the song “These Stones Will Shout” by The Ranconteurs
