Winemaker’s Notes

As we began assembling the 2016 blend and playing with the various components, I started making some Merlot and Petit Verdot blends alongside the Estate Red blend that were simply outstanding. Petit Verdot from this site has laser-like focus on its own and has massive potential to accept other varieties. In our tastings I often refer to it as “the rails and the coal car” — a framework upon which to set the other Bordeaux varieties. Merlot marries perfectly upon this framework — fattening and broadening the wine on the palate with its juicy fruit and floral aromatics. Things came together beautifully, and we decided to create a new wine, named after my two daughters, to show off these two varieties together and the magic they create.

The 2016 FIGLIA is inky to the rim and has a delightful note of mixed florals, dried figs, boysenberry, and cinnamon. On the palate it is delightfully soft, long, and pleasing. More approachable on release than the flagship Estate Red, I still think this wine has 10-15 year age worthiness if you choose to lay it down.
